Women's Swimming Competes at New England Collegiate Challenge
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Maine competed at the New England Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Harvard University, on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears joined Vermont, New Hampshire and Bryant, along with the Crimson, at the meet.
Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) captured the top individual finish for the Black Bears as the sophomore placed second in the 100 meter fly with a time of 1:07.20. Fellow sophomore Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) also had a strong showing as she was fifth in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:10.34 and touched the wall seventh in the 50 meter freestyle race at 28.93.
Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) finished fourth in the 800 meter freestyle with a time of 9:53.19 and was 10th in the 400 meter freestyle at 4:48.72. Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) had a pair of 10th place finishes in the 50 meter freestyle (29.26) and the 200 meter breaststroke (3:00.72).
Naja Harvey (Orono, Minnesota) continues her strong start to her freshman campaign as she placed seventh in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:56.30. Senior Katelyn Hunt (Wayzata, Minn.) also had a top ten showing as she was ninth in the 200 meter fly with a time of 2:38.57.
The Black Bears also had strong showing in the relay events. Emiy Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Harvey, Smrcina and Dwyer teamed up for a fifth place showing in the 400 meter medley relay with a time of 4:40.13. Dwyer, Harvey, Buczkowski and Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) placed sixth in the 400 meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:12.73.
The Black Bears return to action when they host URI on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m.
