Swimming Competes at Boston College, Women in Dual Meet Action Against BC, Florida Gulf Coast

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Black Bears had several strong showings in their meet at Boston College as the men swam against the Eagles while the women battled Florida Gulf Coast and Boston College in a dual meet. On the women's side it was Boston College 170 Maine 130 and Florida Gulf Coast 168 Maine 123 while the men were defeated 187-102 by Boston College.

The women's 200 yard medley relay team of Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) continue to impress as they placed second in their event Friday evening with a time of 1:50.84.

Harvey picked up the win for the Black Bears as she touched the wall first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.86. Smrcina also had solid individual showings as she won the 100 yard fly at 59.81 and was fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:09.80. Aside from her assistance in the relay events, Buczkowski also placed third in the 100 yard backstroke individual event with a time of 1:02.54.

Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) had a solid day in the sprint events for Maine as she finished third in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.32 and fourth in the 200 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 1:57.88, and also added a fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle at 54.98. Dwyer was edged out in the event by Trodden who took home third place honors in the 100 yard free with a time of 54.97, just a tick in front of Dwyer. Trodden also placed second in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.50.

Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) placed fifth in the 500 yard freestyle event with a time of 5:22.53 followed by Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) who was sixth at 5:23.73.

On the diving boards it was Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) leading the way as she swept both events, winning the one meter at 247.85 and taking first place honors in the three meter with a final score of 244.80.

The Black Bears took first, second and third in three events, starting with the 500 yard freestyle event as Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) won the event with a time of 4:54.20, followed by Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) at 5:08.95 and Zach Hamer (Andover, Mass.) at 5:12.86. Maine also took the top three spots in the 100 yard fly with Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) winning the event at 54.58 followed by Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) at 59.15 and Cody Lachance (Winslow, Maine) at 1:00.00. Maine was also one, two, three in the 200 yard IM with Matthew Twist (Belgrade, Maine) winning the event at 2:11.57. He was followed by Hamer at 2:12.66 and Eric Deluca (St. Paul, Minn.) who touched the wall at 2:17.19.

Fahey also had a strong showing in the 1000 yard freestyle as he placed third at 10:15.01. Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.) also had a third place finish as he touched the wall at 58.59 in the 100 yard back event. Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) led the way in the breaststroke races for Maine, placing fourth in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.65) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:13.76).

The Black Bears closed out the meet with a strong performance in the 400 yard freestyle relay as Meehan, Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) and Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) won the event with a time of 3:24.04.

The Black Bears return to action to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 with conference action as both teams engage in dual meets against Boston University and Stony Brook. The meet is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and will be held at Boston University.
