Swimming Competes at Bryant University
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The University of Maine swimming teams competed in meets at Bryant University on Thursday night. The women's squad fell by a score of 164-98 while the men dropped their meet to the Bulldogs, 168-94. Matt England (Bangor, Maine) and Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) each won events on the men's side while Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) won a pair of events for the women.
Smrcina captured first place honors in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.96) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.07) while picking up a third place finish in the 200-yard IM at 2:17.66. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.30) and placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:27.49.
Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.71 and was third in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.66. Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) took home third place showings in both the 200-yard fly (2:15.19) and the 100-yard fly (59.78).
Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) placed second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.24 while Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) was second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:59.01.
On the men's side, England won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.43 and was third in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:02.40. Terrio took home first place honors in the 200-yard fly at 2:00.00 and was third in the 100-yard freestyle at 51.05.
Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.28), third in the 200-yard IM (2:04.29) and was also third in the 100-yard backstroke at 56.26. Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) place third in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.53) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.00). Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) also had a pair of third place showings as he was third in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.43) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.40).
Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) was the runner-up in the 100-yard fly at 54.41 while Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:20.98).
The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Harvey, Smrcina and Trodden won the event with a final time of 1:51.29.
The swimming and diving squads return to action tomorrow when they compete in a dual meet at Boston College against the Eagles and Liberty. The meet is slated to begin at 5 PM.
