Swimming & Diving Sweeps Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming and diving squads swept Bates College in meets on Saturday afternoon. The women's team defeated Bates 182-104 while the men won 159-139.

In all, the Black Bears teamed up for 12 total first place victories on the afternoon. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) led the women's squad as she won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.02) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.18). Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) also picked up a pair of victories after she took first place in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.51) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.09).

Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.90) and took second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:02.23). Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) also picked up a win and a second place finish. Dubiel won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:56.17) and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.66). Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) won the 100-yard butterfly (59.83) and placed second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.90) and the 50-yard freestyle (25.25). Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.32 while taking third place honors in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.99).

Abby Linn (Elkhart, Ind.) placed second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.34) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.56). Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.08) and placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.38).

Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) swept the diving events as she won the one-meter with a score of 249.70 and placed first in the three-meter at 255.70.

On the men's side, Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) swept the distance events after placing first in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:18.19) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.92). Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.15) and the 200-yard IM (2:00.95) while placing second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.43). Matt England (Bangor, Maine) also won a pair of events for Maine as he was first in the 100-yard backstroke (55.73) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.42).

Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) won the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.02) and placed third in both the 100-yard freestyle (50.31) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.60). Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) won the 100-yard freestyle at 50.03 and was third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.91). Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) placed second in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.81) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.64) while David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) was third in the same events at 10:28.49 and 5:03.89, respectively.

Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) paced the men on the diving board with a pair of second place finished. Wibby took second in both the one-meter (219.85) and the three-meter (198.65).

In the relay events, Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Harvey, Smrcina and Trodden teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.97. On the men's side, England, Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine), Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) and Quinn took second place in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:39.71. Quinn, Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Hoffman and Gaulin placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:30.57.

The Black Bears return to the pool when they host Providence on Jan. 17 at 4 PM.
