Swimming & Diving Compete on Day One of Dartmouth Invitational
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams competed on day one of the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday evening. After day one, the women are tied for fifth with 85 points while the men are in sixth with 36 points.
The Black Bears matched up with six other schools for a large invitational meet which continues through tomorrow. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) had the top finish for Maine as she finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.41. In the other events on the women's side, Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) finished 25th in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:16.99. Erica Smrcinia (North Falmouth, Mass.) led Maine in the 200-yard IM with a 21st place finish at 2:18.18.
On the diving boards, Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) finished 11th in the three-meter event with a score of 224.85.
On the men's side, Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) had the top finish on the men's side when he placed 18th in the 200-yard IM at 2:01.67. David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) finished 19th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.47. Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) had the top finish for the Black Bears in the 50-yard freestyle at 26th (22.97).
In the relay events, Harvey, Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario), Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) and Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) combined to finish third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.33. In the 400-yard medley relay, Buczkowski, Smrcinia, Dwyer and Linden teamed up to finish ninth with a time of 4:07.30.
On the men's side in the relays, Matt England (Bangor, Maine), Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.), Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) and Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) took 11th in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:42.88.
The teams close out the Dartmouth Invitational tomorrow morning starting at 9 AM.
