Maine Finishes 4th at America East Championships

WORCESTER,Mass.- The University of Maine women's swimming and diving teams completed America East Championships on Sunday night. Maine finished fourth with 462.5 total points. Senior Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) set a new school record in the 200-yard backstroke. Naja Harvey (Orono,Minn.) set a new school record in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Maine started off the evening session with Kailey Dowd (Mendon, Mass.) finishing sixth in the 1650-yard free at 17:24.45 followed by Katie-Jean Hinckley (Prospect, Conn.) in eighth 17:37.02 and Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) grabbed ninth place 17:43.79.

Bender crushed her 200-yard backstroke school record with a time of 2:03.46 finishing sixth place overall. Amber Murray (Dover -Foxcroft, Maine) placed 14th and Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) touched for 16th.

Harvey set a new school record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.53 placing fourth overall. Abby Linn had her best time of the season finishing ninth (2:24.20) followed by Cecelia McEachern 2:25.19 (Ellsworth, Maine) in 10th and Samantha Mathieu (Oakland, Maine) in 15th 2:29.48.

Senior Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) placed 11th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.67.

Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) grabbed an eighth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly 2:07.86 followed by Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) in 9th and Rebecca Bonnett (Bath, Maine) in 14th.

Maine ended the night with a fifth place finish in the 400-yard free relay led by Dwyer, Harvey, Katernia Mosquera-Cardi (Montreal, Canada) and Tessa Lindsley (Bath, Maine).

Prelims: 

Maine started off the morning session with Bender finishing seventh in the 200-yard backstroke 2:10.76. Teammate Amber Murray finished 11th 2:16.96 and Courtney Mellish placed 15th 2:17.91.

Dwyer placed 11th in the 100-yard freestyle 53.85. Mosquera-Cardi took 15th 54.33. 

Harvey nabbed a fourth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke 2:20.24. Abby Linn finished ninth 2:25.94 and Cecelia McEachern in 10th 2:26.48.

In the 200-yard butterfly Sharp finished sixth with a time of 2:06.40. Smrcina placed 10th 2:07.50 and Rebecca Bonnett in 13th 2:13.20.

Kailey Dowd finished sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle at 17:30.57 followed by Katie-Jean Hinckley in eighth 17:43.79 and Courtney Norman in ninth 17:47.19.
