Women’s Track and Field Sets Several Season-Best Marks at Valentine Invitational
BOSTON, Mass. – The Maine women's track and field team set several new season-best marks as the team competed at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University on Friday. The women's team competed in today's events while Maine men's team will compete on Saturday
Five Black Bears athletes improved upon the team's best event times in the highly competitive invitational beginning with Shannon O'Neil in the 500-meter dash. O'Neil edged the former season best, set by Kelsey Maxim's race against Holy Cross last weekend. O'Neil tallied a time of 1:21.70, topping Maxim's mark of 1:22.31. O'Neil's new season-best time was good for 35th place while Maxim followed close behind with a final time of 1:21.99.
Meanwhile, Rachel Wilkinson topped her former best in the mile run on Friday as she tallied a time of 5:07.61, nearly eight seconds faster than her previous season best of 5:15.52. Her time today garnered her a placing of 52nd.
Jack of all trades, Jaclyn Masters also tallied a season-best time in the 200-meter dash as she edged her previous top time of 27:00 seconds with a new campaign-best time of 26.51.32, good for 99th.
Meanwhile Emily Boardman set a new personal best in the weight throw, recording a final toss of 51-01.75, besting her previous top-mark of 48-08.25, which she set against Holy Cross. With her new best mark she cracked the top-10 in the event, the only Maine entrant to do so. Meanwhile veteran thrower, Robyn McFetters, fresh off her America East co-field athlete of the week award, also competed in the event and came in 13th with a mark of 49-11.25.
In other field events, Ashley Donohoe and Alexis Wessels competed in the shot put as the duo took 16th and 35th respectively. Donohoe finished with a final distance of 39-01.00 while Wessels finished with a distance of 33-01.75.
In the jump events Grace MacLean competed in the high jump and recorded a mark of 5-03.00, while Masters competed in the pole vault event as she took 15th overall with a final mark of 10-06.00.
A trio of Black Bears ran in the 800m as Ariel McNett (2:24.58), Darien Lewis (2:24.85) and Ashton Weiler (2:25.85) finished 96th, 97th and 106th, respectively.
In the 60-meter hurdle event, Ashten Hackett was the top Maine entrant as she finished the event .03 seconds off her previous season best time of 9.07, recorded against Holy Cross. MacLean and Jessica McCarthy also competed in the event with times of 9.31 and 10.62, respectively.
Katelyn Guilmette was Maine's only athlete in the 60m as she took 47th overall with a time of 8.14.
The Black Bears men's team will be in action tomorrow at the Valentines Invite hosted by BU while the women's team will be back in action on Feb. 15 when Maine hosts New Hampshire and Northeastern at the New Balance indoor track and field house. The meet is scheduled for 12 p.m.
