Volleyball Drops Tourney Opener to Marquette 3-1
Nov. 23, 2007 MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a match to Marquette University by a final score of 1-3 (30-17, 31-29, 21-30, 31-33) in the "Battle for the Bird" tournament Friday evening. Maine fell to 3-23 on the season, while Marquette improved to 9-16. Maine was led in kills by junior Lindsay Allman who tallied 13. Classmate Margaret Page added 11 kills of her own. Allman also added 11 digs for a double-double. Junior Laura Goettsch had a team high 14 digs for the Black Bears. Freshman Paige Tortorello recorded 37 assists for Maine. Page added three blocks for the Black Bears. Marquette was led in kills by Kimberley Todd who posted a match-high of 17. The Golden Eagles were led in assists by Katie Weidner who totalled a match-high 41. Todd also tallied 17 digs for a double-double while Rabbecka Gonyo had seven blocked attacks for Marquette. The first game showed that Maine came to play. They took a hold of the game early and didn't let go. Maine took the game easily by a score of 30-17. Maine out-killed the Eagles in the game 15-9. In the second game, it was a lot closer. Maine manged to stay on top most of the way and evened the game with a score of 29-29. But Marquette was too much and they evened the match with a game two score of 31-29. Marquette led in kills in the game 16-13. The third game saw Marquette take a stonghold ont he match. The Eagles tallied 19 kills to Maine's 12 and took the third game 30-21. In the fourth and final game, Maine wasn't ready to let go. But it seemed that the Eagles were just too much in the end and took the game and the match with a final frame score of 33-31. Marquette tallied 22 kills to Maine's 15. Maine tallied 55 kills to Marquette's 66. The Black Bears had 53 digs compared to 60 for the Eagles. Where the Black Bears did shine is on the serve. Maine had 11 service aces to Marquette's two. Allman tallied four in the match.
The Black Bears' next and final match of the season will be tomorrow at noon against South Dakota State. --UM-- |
