Volleyball Finishes Off Season With Win Over South Dakota St.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Maine volleyball team finished their 2007 season with a win over South Dakota State by a final score of 3-2 (30-24, 16-30, 30-21, 23-30, 15-8) in the consolation match in the "Battle for the Bird" tournament Saturday afternoon. Maine finished rising to 4-23 on the season, while South Dakota State improved to 9-16.

Maine was led in kills by junior Lindsay Allman who posted a match-high 19. Classmate Margaret Page and sophmore Amanda Armstrong tallied 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Allman and junior Laura Goettsch recorded double-doubles with Allman's being 19 kills and 20 digs and Goettsch's being 11 kills and 18 digs. Allman's 20 digs were a match-high. Freshman Paige Tortorello recorded a match-high 55 assists for Maine. Junior Brittany Kiehl had five blocks for the Black Bears.

South Dakota State was led in kills by Mackenzie Angner who posted 16. The Jackrabbits were led in assists by Melia Iwamoto who totalled 46. Samantha Pearson tallied 19 digs for the Jacks while Amy Anderson had eight blocked attacks.

The first game showed that Maine came to play. They took a hold of the game early and didn't let go. Maine took the game 30-24. Maine had 18 kills to SDSU's 17. In the second game, it was all Jacks. Maine couldn't catch up with SDSU and they easily took game two with a score of 30-17. SDSU led in kills in the game 14-9. But Maine was resilient and came back after the break shooting and took a two games to one lead with a third game score of 30-21. Maine tallied 16 kills to the Jackrabbits' 11. In the fourth game the Jackrabbits got back in the match and tied it up with a score of 30-23. This forced a final game five. The Jacks outshot the Black Bears 17-15 in the game. In the fifth and final game, Maine wouldn't say die and they finished off their season with a win by a final game score of 15-8. In the match, Maine tallied 68 kills to SDSU's 64. The Black Bears had 84 digs compared to 77 for the Jacks.

 

 

The Black Bears finished the season with a record of 4-23 and 2-9 in America East play. Maine finished sixth in America East just ahead of Hartford. The Black Bears will be returning all of their players for the 2008 season.
