Volleyball Announces 2008 Schedule

ORONO, Maine - Ten home matches highlight the 2008 University of Maine volleyball schedule, which was released on Friday. Also highlighting the schedule is the Maine Volleyball Tournament, which will be hosted in Orono from Sept. 5-6, as Maine will play host to Big East-foe Providence, MAC-opponent Kent State, and Quinnipiac during the two-day competition.

The new season begins on Aug. 29-30, as Maine will take part in the North Carolina Central Tournament in Durham, N.C. Maine will begin play in the event on Friday with a pair of matches, including Florida Gulf Coast and Elon. The Black Bears will face UNC Asheville on Saturday, with the tournament's playoffs set to begin that day following round robin play.

Maine returns home the following week to play host to its tournament on Sept. 5-6, at Memorial Gym in Orono. Maine will face Providence on Friday, and take on Quinnipiac and Kent State on Saturday. Admission is FREE for all home volleyball matches played at Memorial Gym.

The Black Bears take to the road the following two weekends, as they compete in the University of Buffalo Tournament on Sept. 12-13, and the University of Connecticut Tournament on Sept. 19-20. In the Buffalo Tournament, Maine will face Butler on Friday, and Maryland Eastern Shore and Buffalo on Saturday. In the UConn event, the Black Bears will take on Temple Friday and face Connecticut and Cornell on Saturday.

Maine returns home to Orono for a home match versus Husson College on Sept. 26 before America East play begins. The conference schedule kicks off with three-straight road matches, including Albany (Oct. 3), UMBC (Oct. 5) and Binghamton (Oct. 10).

The Black Bears will then have the luxury of competing at home for three-straight contests. The three-game homestand begins on Oct. 17 versus Stony Brook, and continues with Hartford (Oct. 19). The streak concludes with a home match versus New Hampshire on Oct. 24. Both teams will then turn around two days later and play in Durham on Oct. 26.

 

 

A pair of home matches follow versus UMBC on Oct. 31 and Albany on Nov. 2. Maine heads back out on the road for its final two away matches of the regular season. The Black Bears will first take on Hartford on Nov. 7, and then face Stony Brook on Nov. 9. Maine closes out the regular season on Nov. 14 at home versus Binghamton.

The top four teams in the America East standings following the regular season will advance to the league's tournament. The America East Championship will be held Nov. 21-23 at the site of the regular season champion.
