Tortorello Selected As Setter Of The Week

Oct. 29, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Freshman Setter Paige Tortorello was named Setter of the Week Monday by America East. Tortorello averaged 14.4 assists per game last weekend, including 15.5 assists per game in a 3-1 upset over UMBC on Saturday. It was the first weekly award for a Black Bear this season. Player, Rookie and Setter of Week are the weekly honors for America East Volleyball.

In Friday's match against Binghamton, the rookie only played in one game but still managed 10 assists. In Saturday's match against the Retrievers, Tortorello tallied 62 assists in four games coming just seven short of a school record. She totaled 13 digs as well to tally her first career double-double of the assist-dig variety. Tortorello also recorded a perfect attack percentage in three attempts in the match against UMBC.

Tortorello is the first Maine player to be selected for one of the America East Volleyball weekly honors of Player, Rookie, and Setter of the Week since Laura Goettsch last season. Goettsch was named Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 30 after totaling 32 kills and seven blocks in back-to-back matches versus Stony Brook and Hartford.

Paige is a freshman at the University of Maine from Mundelein, Illinois. She is a graduate of Mundelein High School. She is the daughter of Bob and Carol Tortorello and a business major at the University of Maine.
