ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine cross country teams will host a meet for the first time this season as the squads will hold the America East Pre-Conference meet on Saturday, Sept. 6. The race is a preview for America East teams to the conference championship, also hosted by Maine on Nov. 1. The course will be set on the campus of the University of Maine.
The meet will feature four teams from America East as UMass-Lowell, Vermont and New Hampshire will join the Black Bears for the event.
The men's squad lost one of its highest profile athletes as Kelton Cullenberg graduated last spring. The Black Bears do boast a roster that returns 10 runners from last season. Leading the charge for Maine are seniors Alexander Moser, Jarrod Lenfestand Andrew Closson.
Moser and Lenfest saw the most amount of action of the senior group during 2013 cross-country season, as the duo ran in 10 meets combined.
Moser finished second highest in the standings for Maine at the conclusion of the 2013 America East championship last season, placing fourth overall with a time of 25:11.92. Lenfest also competed and finished with a time of 26:25.51.
The women's side will see an injection of youth to the roster as the squad lost several seniors, including last years highest finisher at the conference meet, Rachel Wilkinson.
Carolyn Stocker is the lone senior on the team and will provide much of the leadership on this year's squad. Stocker was the second-highest entrant for Maine at the America East meet, as she finished with a time of 19:13.40.
Also providing veteran leadership is Lauren Connor, Alexandra Courtney, Sarah Heald, Naomi Holzhauer, Shannon O'Neil, Mary Scanlan, Abigail Wessels and Annabelle Wilson. The eight runners are part of the junior class.
Newcomer Hanna Stefl joins Kelsey Maxim as the team's sophomore duo, while the Black Bears will sport eight freshmen for the coming year.
Maine cross country fans will have a chance to see many familiar faces as the Black Bears roster is comprised of 21 runners from the state with 12 on the women's team and nine on the men's side.
