CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision to Clemson on Saturday afternoon in Clemson, S.C. Maine moves to 1-1 on the season, while Clemson improves to 3-2. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) led the Maine offense as he was 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored and two RBI. The Black Bears out hit the Tigers 10-9 in the game.
Similar to Friday, Maine jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) led off the inning with a single to first base. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.). Colin Gay singled to right field plating Doran. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and Gay advanced to third base. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored Gay with a single through the right side. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) had a two-run single down the right field line scoring both Black and Fransoso.
Clemson got on the board in the bottom of the third. Thomas Brittle walked, advanced to third when Steve Wilkerson singled through the right side. Brittle scored the first run of the game for the Tigers on a wild pitch. Wilkerson scored the second run of the inning for the Tigers when Richie Shaffer singled to left field.
The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Attanasio singled to third base and scored when Brittle tripled to right center. Brittle scored to tie the game at 4-4 when Wilkerson singled through the left side. Phil Pohl was hit by a pitch. Spencer Kieboom belted a three-run home run to left field, scoring both Wilkerson and Pohl.
The Tigers took a 9-4 lead when Attanasio walked and Pohl followed with a home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Maine got a run in the top of the ninth inning. Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut and singled to right field, but was out when Maine grounded into a double play. Connolly doubled down the left field line and scored when Gay singled up the middle.
Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start on the mound and went 4.1 innings. He allowed seven runs on six hits while striking out four. He picks up the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. He was replaced by Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) who went 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on a pair of hits. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) made his Maine debut and went 0.2 innings. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) replaced Trask and went 1.1 innings. He allowed just one hit while striking out a pair in his Maine debut.
Dominic Leone got the start on the mound for Clemson and went five innings. He allowed four runs on six hits and improves to 2-0 on the season. Mike Kent went two inning and surrendered just one hit. Patrick Andrews pitched the top of the eighth for the Tigers and fanned the side. Clay Bates pitched the ninth and allowed one run on three hits.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM.
