Black Bears Drop Rubber Match at #16 Clemson 9-6

CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maine baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but in the end dropped a 9-6 decision to Clemson in the rubber match of the three-game series in Clemson, South Carolina. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) had two hits, drove in one and scored one for the Black Bears. 

 

Maine falls to 1-2 on the season, while Clemson improves to 4-2. 

 

The Black Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Alex Calbick singled to right field and scored on a wild pitch. 

 

Maine added to its lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) reached on an error, advanced on a Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) sacrifice and scored when Calbick doubled. 

 

The Black Bears scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to shortstop and Heath followed with a single through the right side. Both runners scored when Fransoso hit a ball that the Clemson outfielder dropped. Fransoso advanced to third on the play. He scored when Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled. 

 

The Tigers got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Steve Wilkerson singled to third base. Phil Pohl singled to left center to put two runners on base. Wilkerson scored when Spencer Keiboom doubled down the left field line. Brad Felder drove home Pohl with a sacrifice fly. 

 

Clemson added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull to within two runs. Wilkerson singled and Richie Shaffer followed with two-run home run. 

 

The Tigers took a 9-6 lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jon McGibbon walked and Jason Stolz singled to left field. Dominic Attanasio followed with a single to load the bases. Wilkerson drove in McGibbon and Stolz with a two-run double. Pohl also doubled plating both Wilkerson and Attanasio. Pohl scored when Shaffer doubled. 

 

Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start on the mound and went five innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits. Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) replaced Coughlin and allowed five runs on five hits in 0.2 innings. He picks up the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. Connolly was replaced by Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) scattered two hits over the final 2.1 innings. 

 

David Hasselden went three innings and allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on five hits. Kevin Pohle went three innings and allowed three runs, none of which were earned. He picks up the win and improves to 2-0 on the season. Scott Firth went two innings and allowed one hit. Daniel Gossett pitched the final inning for the Tigers. 

 

Gay had three hits for the Black Bears, while Heath, Calbick and Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) each finished the game with a pair. 

 

Clemson finished the game with a 14-10 edge in hits. The Black Bears did not commit and error, while the Tigers made five. 

 

The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Florida A & M. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
