TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped an 18-2 decision at #8 Florida State University on Sunday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. Maine falls to 3-4 on the season with the loss, while Florida State improves to 8-1.
FSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back. The Seminoles plated six runs in both the bottom of the second and fourth innings before adding a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Maine got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled to right center field and Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) drew a walk. Alex Calbick doubled down the right field line scoring Fransoso. Connolly scored when Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice.
FSU added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it an 18-2 final.
Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start on the mound and falls to 0-2 on the season. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) and Manny Pupo (Boynton Beach, Fla.) also pitched in the game for the Black Bears.
Mike Compton got the win on the mound for the Seminoles.
The two teams were scheduled to play game two of the doubleheader approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of game 1.
