NEWARK, N.J. – The University of Maine men's basketball team fell at Seton Hall by the score of 76-49 on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Maine goes to 0-4 on the year while Seton Hall improves to 4-1. The Black Bears were led by Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) who had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Seton Hall took a quick 11-6 lead to open the game, but Maine closed the gap to 11-8 on a pair of Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) free throws. Fraser then blocked a Seton Hall drive to the basket before Edwards converted a fast break layup to make it a one-point game.
The Pirates went on a run to take a 29-18 lead, but Edwards converted a nice layup and got fouled to bring the lead down to single digits.
Seton Hall added a bucket before half to make it 31-20 at half.
Edwards led Maine with 14 points in the first half while Fraser added four points and three rebounds.
The Pirates took a 38-24 lead t open the second half, but Fraser grabbed the offensive rebound off a missed three and got the put-back and a foul to cut into the lead.
Jon Mesghna (Frankfurt, Germany) had a nice drive baseline and layup to make it a nine-point lead and a pair of Edwards free throws made it 38-31 with 14:30 left.
The Pirates responded with a three to expand the lead back to 10 and despite the Black Bears best efforts, could not get it closer than eight the rest of the way.
Edwards finished with 18 points, five assists and three steals while Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) added five points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Maine held a 41-38 rebounding edge but shot 35.3 percent to Seton Hall's 46.9 percent.
The Pirates were led by Fuquan Edwin who had 15 points and six rebounds.
