ORONO, Maine – Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) had career-highs of 15 points and 12 assists to lead the University of Maine men's basketball team to a 72-66 win over Siena on Sunday afternoon in Alfond Arena. Maine improves to 1-4 on the season while Siena drops to 2-4.
Pollard Leads Men's Basketball to 72-66 Win Over Siena
Pollard had four assists in a key 10-to-nothing run in the beginning of the second half that turned a 40-39 deficit into a nine-point lead for the Black Bears. The Saints got within 49-45 with 10:53 left, but Pollard responded with a three and assisted on consecutive Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) buckets to stretch the lead to 56-45 with nine minutes remaining.
Siena got within five at 62-57 with 4:39 left, but a Pollard to Edwards alley-oop dunk stretched the lead to seven and two Edwards free throws pushed the game out of reach of the Saints.
Siena took a 36-33 into halftime after a back-and-forth first half had seven lead changes and five ties.
Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) led Maine in the first half with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as Maine held Siena to 2-of-12 shooting from three-point range.
The Black Bears scored the first six points to start the second half before the Saints took the 40-39 lead and Pollard responded for the Black Bears.
Edwards finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals while Fraser had 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Maine shot 43.1 percent from the field while holding Siena to 33.9 percent.
O.D. Anosike led Siena with 12 points and 20 rebounds.
Maine plays Northeastern on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
