POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Marist by the score of 94-69 on Sunday afternoon at the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Maine falls to 3-8 on the year while Marist improves to 4-6. Maine was led by Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) who had 23 points.
Marist took a 17-12 lead, but two Edwards free throws and a steal by Pollard finished off by a Shaun Lawton (Harlem, N.Y.) layup cut the lead to one.
However, the Red Foxes caught fire and Maine could get no closer than seven the rest of the half as Marist took a 48-31 lead into intermission after going 18-for-32 from the field in the first stanza while Maine went 12-for-31.
Maine was led by Edwards who had 10 points in the first half and Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) who added seven.
Maine scored four quick points to start the second half, and following a Red Fox bucket Edwards made a nice spin move underneath the basket and converted a layup.
The Black Bears got a stop, and Edwards got fouled and converted two free throws to cut the lead to 11 before Maine got another stop and Pollard raced ahead and made a fast break layup over a Red Fox defender to cut the lead to 50-43 with 15:43 left.
Following a Marist bucket, Edwards got fouled in the lane while making a jumper to make it 52-46.
The Black Bears continued to pressure and cut the lead to 55-50, but Marist responded with an 8-to-2 run midway through the second half and took a 63-52 lead.
The Black Bears tried to cut into the lead, but Marist responded every time to pull away as they Red Foxes shot 54.8 percent for the game while Maine shot 38.5 percent.
Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Pollard finished with 15 points and four assists.
Marist was led by Devin Price who had 28 points.
