ORONO, Maine – Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, gave out five assists and had a key layup late in the game to lead the University of Maine men's basketball team to an 84-78 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena. Maine is now 4-8 on the year while FGCU falls to 8-5.
With Maine clinging to a 71-69 lead with 2:44 left, Edwards converted a layup and stole the ball on the ensuing FGCU possession. Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) then canned a three-pointer to give Maine a seven-point lead.
The Eagles got within 76-72 with 48 seconds left and 78-74 with 40 seconds left, but Edwards' dunk with 30 seconds remaining sealed the win for Maine.
Maine was able to take a 37-27 lead into halftime as the Black Bears scored the last six points courtesy of a pair of Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) layups and an Edwards dunk.
Edwards had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists in the first half to lead Maine. Fraser added nine points and four rebounds.
The Eagles came out on fire in the second half, going on an 11-to-nothing run to take a 38-37 lead, but Edwards made a jumper that gave Maine a lead it never relinquished.
Fraser finished with 21 points and seven rebounds while Jon Mesghna (Frankfurt, Germany) added 11 points and nine rebounds. Edwards was named Maine's America East Player of the Game.
Maine shot 50.9 percent from the field while holding FGCU to 40.5 percent.
Brett Comer led Florida Gulf Coast, which came into the contest with the 35th-best RPI in the country, with 14 points and eight assists.
Maine plays its non-conference finale on Dec. 29 at Quinnipiac.
