ORONO, Maine – The No. 7 University of Maine football team fell to No. 14 Towson by the score of 40-30 on Saturday evening at Alfond Stadium. Maine is now 7-2 overall and 5-1 in CAA play while Towson goes to 7-2 and 5-1 in league play.
Towson got on the board midway through the first quarter on a Terrance West eight yard run.
Warren Smith (Forked River, N.J.) tied the game for Maine on a 15-yard run to complete a nine-play, 70-yard drive, but West scored again in the beginning of the second quarter to put Towson up 14-7.
The Tigers extended their lead midway through the second quarter, but the Black Bears blocked the extra point and Trevor Coston (Greenlawn, N.Y.) returned it for two points to make it 20-9.
Maine scored via a David Hood (Galloway, N.J.) one-yard run with 9:51 left in the third quarter, but the Tigers answered twice to take a 33-16 lead with 13:28 left in the fourth.
Smith found Damarr Aultman (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) for a 53-yard score with 13:09 left to make it a 33-23 game, but West scored again with just under six minutes left to make it 40-23.
Arthur Williams (Springfield, Mass.) caught a three yard pass from Smith with three minutes left to complete the scoring.
