BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Cassidy Svetek (Burlington, Ontario) tallied a pair of second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and propel the #24 University of Maine field hockey team to its first conference win as it downed Vermont 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Annabelle Hamilton (North Vancouver, British Columbia) also scored for the 7-4 Black Bears.
The Catamounts jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:18 mark when Alana Izzo tallied her third goal of the season. Izzo carried the ball into the Maine zone and spun, burying a hard shot just inside the left post.
Hamilton tied things at 1-1 with her eighth goal of the season and her fourth goal in her last two games. Holly Stewart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) started the play as she dribbled the ball into the circle and sent a crossing pass over to Hamilton who tipped the ball home.
Svetek gave Maine the lead at the 48:29 with her sixth tally of the year. Nicole Sevey (Skowhegan, Maine) began the action as she redirected a pass over to Svetek who finished the play by beating Vermont goalkeeper Stephanie Zygmunt.
Svetek added an insurance goal for Maine with just under 10-minutes remaining in regulation. The freshman forward was able to gather a loose ball in front of the cage off a corner and slide the ball into the back of the cage, giving the Black Bears a 3-1 advantage that they would not relinquish.
Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta) moves to 6-1 on the season after making one save in the cage for Maine. Zygmunt falls to 1-9 on the year after making 10 saves for the Catamounts.
The Black Bears outshot Vermont 22-8 and held the edge in penalty corners 9-2.
Maine returns to action tomorrow when it battles Massachusetts tomorrow at 2 p.m.
