Maine falls to Boston University

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team falls to eighth ranked Boston University 5-3 on Saturday Jan. 11 at Alfond Arena. Sophomore Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minn.) scored two for Maine.

The Black Bears opened the scoring with a goal at 6:03 into the period when Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) smacked a slap shot from up top and Audra Richards knocked it in the net to give Maine a 1-0 lead over the Terriers.

Maine's defense played tough allowing BU only three shots in the first period while Maine had 13 shots. 

Both teams came out firing in the second period.  Maine struck early in the second when Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario) put the puck in the net on a pass from Richards.

 Just seconds later, the Terriers put one on the board at 1:09 into the second when Maddie  Elia scored on a pass from Taylor Hoize.

BU scored again at 2:54 when Sarah Lefort found Lousie Warren for her fourteenth goal of the season making it a 2-2 game. The Terriers continued their scoring streak when Hoize teamed with Kaleigh Fratkin to put one by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy (Lake Peeskill, N.Y.) at 3:52 into the second.

The Black Bears answered just seconds later when McDonald found Richards who knocked the puck in the net at 4:32 into the second.

Maine outshot the Terriers 14-5 in the second period.

The Terriers secured the win with two goals in the third period. The first came at 2:07 into the period when Lefort scored her own goal on a pass from Sarah Bayersdorfer to make it a 4-3 game.

BU struck late in the game as Wareen and Lefort teamed up again to seal the win for BU.

Maine goalie Meghann Treacy made 9 saves and BU goalie Kerrin Sperry stopped 34 Black Bear shots.

 The Terriers improve to a 16-4-1 record and Maine falls to a 2-14-5 on the season.
 

Maine returns to the ice Sunday Jan 19th against Providence College. The puck drops at 1pm.
