Vestal, N.Y. – The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated Binghamton University this afternoon by a score of 3-1. With the win, the Black Bears improve to 6-5-2 (2-2-1) while the Bearcats fall to 6-7-1 (0-4-1) on the season.
Binghamton's Jamie Holliday would strike first as she laced a 16-yard shot to the upper right side of the net. Sarah Furminger would notch the assist for the Bearcats to take the 1-0 lead 1:20 into the first half.
Nikki Misener (Burlington, Ontario) would find the back of the net 25 minutes later as she took a pass from Eve L'Abbe (Laval, Quebec) on a 12-yard strike.
First half action would end in a 1-1 tie as Maine held a 9-5 shot advantage over Binghamton.
Second half play saw all Black Bear action as Camille Varin-Tremblay (St.-Hubert, Quebec) took a 14 yard unassisted shot that would bank off the crossbar and trickle in for the goal at the 47-minute mark. Misener would later tally her second goal of the game at 59:00 as she took an assist from Charlene Achille (Longueuil, Quebec).
Lauren Swant (Oakville, Ontario) anchored the Black Bears in goal as she allowed one goal against while saving two attempts. Elise Applegate (Lewiston, Maine) saw nearly nine minutes of action in net for the Black Bears, where she would save two shots on target. Swant improves to 6-4-2.
Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs split time evenly in goal for the Bearcats. Martin allowed one goal with three saves while Speirs allowed two goals.
Swant improves to 6-4-2 with Speirs falling to 2-5-0.
Maine held a 12-9 shot advantage over Binghamton.
Maine returns to action on October 11 when it travels to Stony Brook, N.Y. to face Stony Brook for a 7:00 PM match. The Black Bears return home on October 14 where they will host New Hampshire for a 1:00 PM start.
